about

Ainslie says:
The guts of this song had been demoed back in 2012 and had been lying dormant since last year. You know that experience when someone tells you to listen to an album and for whatever reason you don’t feel ready at that time but then a few months or years pass and it comes into your peripheral again and the timing seems right. That’s how I feel about this song. The lyrics and general vibe of the song didn’t really fit into anything I was releasing back in 2012 but maybe, because of COVID, or a massive life change, I felt a little more open and free to pursue this one and I’m so glad I did. James went all Stranger Things with the production which I absolutely love and again lifted this song into an atmosphere that elevates it beyond what I could have imagined.

James says:
The nuts and bolts of this song already existed so I took what was there and just went pretty mental on it. At this point I felt it would be good for all the songs to have a “sound” as I try to do in all my stuff, so more heavy synths and some heavy electronica influences came to the front which worked with the lyrics. It’s often difficult to deconstruct then re-work an existing tune but this one came really quickly.

lyrics

Slow motion it’s out of line
But there’s a symmetry in the changing of tides
Now there’s a river running fly
Unlock the gate to your mind

You’re comfortable in your skin
Dantien is flowing within
Head, shoulders to your toes in time
Unlock the gate to your mind

Much to your surprise you found the animal inside
Much to your surprise you turned the animal outside
Much to your surprise you found the animal inside
Much to your surprise you turned the animal out animal outside

There’s a confidence a place to hide
In the reverie of your ride
You’re unaware like a child
Of how beautiful you are, wild

You’re unlocked within
In your saline spin
Oh, sever all ties tonight
While you unlock the gate to your mind

Much to your surprise you found the animal inside
Much to your surprise you turned the animal outside
Much to your surprise you found the animal inside
Much to your surprise you turned the animal out animal outside
