about

Ainslie says:
Where it all began. My manager Charlotte had arranged for myself and Lawrie Folvig to head to Ealing, UK in 2018 to spend a couple of days working with James on a song from scratch. We were there in the UK for a writing/promo trip and had done a couple of different co-writes with UK based songwriters and producers whilst we were there. This by far was the most enjoyable. I remember the day vividly, spending time in a beautiful ornate double story house/studio that had an instant vibe when you stepped through the door. We went through the awkward getting to know you jam phase and then started working on what was to become Exit Song. The lyrics were inspired by all the Tesco’s we visited whilst on our trip. And the idea that some of us are stuck in a reality that we wish to be free from .

James says:
The first thing we ever did together! Back in 2018 my studio was still in Ealing. Charlotte (Ainslie’s manager) and I have been pals for a while and she suggested I did a couple of days with Ainslie and Lawrie Folvig while they were in the UK on a promo trip. This track is the result. The first day we got to know each other a bit, I thrashed about on the drums (still in the track-one microphone) while Ainslie and Lawrie jammed out a few sequences on guitars/bass. The bones of the track were done in a day then Ainslie and Lawrie came back the following day with the lyrics. I was totally blown away. The concept was so strong, it really really worked. I recall working on the chorus melody together to get it to really pop, then layering a load of harmonies which blew me away all over again! Such a fun track to do, such a difficult track to finish. I think I was enjoying working on it too much..!

lyrics

Stacking the shelves
Supermarket shift
Fluorescent lights
Making your fire die
Still you persist but you barely get by
While you wonder while you wonder what it all could be like
If you just stepped outside this line
What could your life be like…

To walk out the door
To speak your mind
It’s what you want
Walk out the door
While they choke on your dust
Don’t wait for a sign
If it’s what you want

It holds you close
This so-called security
Digging your hole
Unnecessary apology

Still you persist but you barely get by
While you wonder while you wonder what it all could be like
If you just stepped outside this line
What could your life be like…

To walk out the door
To speak your mind
It’s what you want
Walk out the door
While they choke on your dust
Don’t wait for a sign
If it’s what you want
